South Indian invasions pave the way to bring Hinduism to Sri Lanka. In the 11th Century A.D Sri Lanka became a colony for South India for a short period. During that period Hinduism crept in to Sri Lankan Buddhism. In the 19th Century Hindu Tamils from South India brought Sri Lanka by Britishers to work on their tea estates in up country. They started to practice Hinduism, cults and norms. Later Buddhism and Hinduism mingle together and the two cultures as well. To illustrate how close these two cultures

  • ‘Vel’ procession: a Hindu festival jointly celebrating by Hindus and Buddhists to celebrate God Kataragama (God Skanda Kumara)
  • Kandy Esala procession, a colourful pageant and also a Buddhist festival, decorated by Hindu Gods images.
  • New year falls to Sri Lanka on April and it is also celebrated together by the two cultures. 

Therefore, Sri Lanka is prominent place to explore Hindu culture. Number of sites in Ramayana epic could be seen in Sri Lanka. Festivals of Hindus celebrating, all year around here. There are many temples with colourful Hindu gods’ images and festivals attracts both Sri Lankan’s & foreign travellers.
