The Makandawa Forest Reserve is one of the most untouched rainforests that can be found in Sri Lanka. Home to several rare species of flora and fauna that are endemic to Sri Lanka. Makandawa Forest Reserve is also where the filming for the movie “The Bridge on the River Kwai” (winner of seven Academy Awards in 1958) took place. Following the trails through this tropical rainforest, visitors are often thrilled to discover rock pools with crystal clear waters, stunning waterfalls, and the famous Kelani River that winds its way through the jungle. The area is often billed as a great birdwatching spot for rare and endemic birds; there are 54 different rare bird species that can be found here. 

Belilena is a large and well-known cave which is evidence of human life has been recorded, believed to be from a time as early as 32,000 years ago.  A Sri Lankan paleontologist named P.E.P. Deraniyagala discovered the skeletons of ten individuals at Belilena, and their remains were attributed to the “Balangoda Man”, an early prehistoric ancestor of Sri Lanka’s indigenous people. The Archeological Department of Sri Lanka excavated discovering human remains as well as objects of cultural importance such as bone tools, stone tools and evidence of fire. The cave has since been declared as an “Archaeological Reserve” by the Archaeological Department of Sri Lanka. To visit Belilena Cave, visitors need to walk through the Makandawa Forest Reserve. The cave is located 2000 feet above sea level, and visitors will require the use of a rope or rope ladder. 

Enjoying the view of a stunning Waterfall is already amazing but abseiling takes this adventure far beyond the limits of a normal sightseeing of a tourist. The intense and powerful feeling of the water combined with the fact that you are hanging on a rope and that there is nothing but water beneath and above, will give adrenalin push like you have never experienced before. Water fall
