Pidurangala Rock is an incredible 360-degree viewpoint located opposite the world-famous Sigiriya, Lion Rock. The entrance of Pidurangala is about 2 kilometers north from Lion Rock’s entrance. Hiking to the top is possible for both of these rocks, but hiking at dawn to the top of Pidurangala Rock is a real adventure. Best of all, you get an incredible view of Lion’s Rock itself, which is really special. It is a 30/40-minute hike up to the top with a bit of climbing on boulders at the final part, which can be a bit challenging. History of Pidurangala temple goes back beyond to the first and second century BC. In those days Pidurangala was used as a Buddhist monastery but became a prominent place during the reign of King Kashyapa (477 - 495 AD). In fact, It’s the remains of a hardened magma plug from an extinct volcano that’s long been eroded, only leaving its solid center behind.
Experience the sunrise from the top of Pidurangala Rock where it’s painting the sky a deep shade of purple from its hiding place, behind the horizon. Before long, the mist is fading away, rising upwards to reveal the surroundings. The sky lit up in a pink and an orange shade hue and Sigiriya became visible in the distance. The large boulder, the highest point, has more than enough space for visitors to walk around and enjoy the scenery. Discover panoramic views across the valley and a unique perspective of the Lion’s rock itself. While enjoying the sunrise you can enjoy a mouthwatering traditional Sri Lankan breakfast which will be served at the top of the rock by our tremendous team! It’s a magical spot and moment that’s not to be missed in Sri Lanka. Allow for a little more time to spend at the reclining buddha and the beautiful murals halfway.
